It is not unusual for us to hear stories of students skipping meals because they do not have money or missing a day of class because they can’t afford transportation. We know 80% of them work 30 hours a week or more and are doing their best to make ends meet. Many of us are fortunate enough that we can absorb higher costs and not go without necessities. We all experience it every time we buy something - just about everything we need daily has become more expensive. He went on to earn his Engineering Science degree and became one of OCC’s two recipients of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence. An example is Nicholas Chai, who worked as a waiter and welder and came to OCC assisted by a Foundation Scholarship. They are often awarded based on academic achievement, financial need and community service involvement. Their team maintains partnerships with community agencies whose staff visit campus regularly to offer guidance to students.ĭonations to the OCC Foundation’s Year End Appeal also fund scholar- ships, which are gifts for a student’s education that do not need to be repaid.
